The Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde Poem Sheet. It portrays the sentence of execution of Wilde’s inmate in the prison. The privations broke Wilde - but they also inspired his last work, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol," which was written after his release. The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a poem by Oscar Wilde that deals with what he has experienced in prison. When Wilde arrived, Reading Gaol was one great Victorian machine of Christian penance, forcing prisoners to meditate on their crimes in silence, while performing physical labor amid the reek of their own waste. The only sanitation was a bucket he had to empty - or "slop out" - himself: "You were unlocked, let down for breakfast, locked back up again to eat it, unlocked again to slop out, to empty the bucket, then locked up again," Davis recalls.Ī miserable existence for sure, but Davis says Wilde had it worse - in Wilde's day, prisoners weren't even allowed to talk. Like Wilde, Davis spent 23 hours a day in his cell. In 1895, Wilde was convicted of homosexual activity and sentenced to serve two years. A painting of Wilde hangs inside a cell at the former Reading Prison.

Each of these stories is a complete world, as fully imagined as most entire novels, at once preposterously surreal and painfully immediate. Or capture the ache of love's breakdown in the painfully polite apologies of a man who believes his wife is hallucinating the sound of his snoring ("Oblivion"). Or could explore the deepest and most hilarious aspects of creativity by delineating the office politics surrounding a magazine profile of an artist who produces miniature sculptures in an anatomically inconceivable way ("The Suffering Channel"). Only David Foster Wallace could convey a father's desperate loneliness by way of his son's daydreaming through a teacher's homicidal breakdown ("The Soul Is Not a Smithy"). These are worlds undreamt-of by any other mind. In the stories that make up Oblivion, David Foster Wallace joins the rawest, most naked humanity with the infinite involutions of self-consciousness-a combination that is dazzlingly, uniquely his. Although blessed with some language and primitive medicine, the clan in which Ayla finds herself does not know etiquette as we define it today: among other caste and gender customs, they initiate sex via hand signal. Many of our mothers had one lying around.Ĭlan tells the story of Ayla, a beautiful blond Homo sapiens child who, after being orphaned by an earthquake, is raised by a clan of Neanderthals. Meanwhile, Auel’s six-part Earth’s Children series, of which the 500-page Clan is the first title, has sold 45 million copies. Most of our fathers’ porn was out of reach-if we even wanted it, anyway. The book itself is really good, excellent premise and plot. I wish I had read it rather than listened to it. I will say, the end credits of this audiobook is pure gold, which I can only assume was an oversight by the producers.Īs a massive fan of the A Good Girls Guide to Murder trilogy, I couldn't wait for this book! I even saved it until after Christmas to have something to look forward to. My only gripe, is that the words “walkie-talkie” got way overused, which for me personally, means that it has lost all of its meaning, and now if I find myself ever needing to use one, I will have to think if a new word for it. It is a “who done it” style book, where you will follow one thread and think one thing, then have it turn around, so you won't know who you can trust. This is a very tense and gripping story about friends, social standing, incredibly toxic masculinity (it is written incredibly well, and you will be satisfied with the outcome of it), and a very juicy mystery. GOOD LORDY! Holly Jackson has made a brilliant book. So it was recommended to me to give it a go. If you like twists and turns, you'll love this.įrom what I heard, this was a standalone book, and not a part of the trilogy (not having read them yet). "Hey, Tibs? Maybe if you're nasty enough, you won't miss us and we won't miss you." "I wasn't doing a pep talk," Bridget said defensively, even though she was.Ĭarmen made her wise eyebrows. I only let you do pep talks when you need to feel better." She held up hands crossed at the wrist in a hex sign to ward off Bridget. "I didn't," she said quickly, even though she had. Tibby had nonsensical ideas about what people did in South Carolina, but Carmen knew not to argue with her. You're going to eat barbecue all the time and light firecrackers and everything. "Oh, Tibs," Carmen said, grabbing Tibby's foot from where she sat. "Lena, could you not say that word anymore?" Tibby asked, wilting a little on the edge of Carmen's bed. She was working on removing navy-blue polish from her toenails. My flight's at seven."Ĭarmen flopped the top of the suitcase down on the carpeted floor. Her best satin pair was sprouting tiny ropes of elastic from the waistband. Suddenly she wished she had all-new underwear. "Can you close that suitcase?" Tibby asked Carmen.Ĭarmen glanced at the structured canvas bag splayed wantonly in the middle of her bed. Now, you can meet the young Amelia Bedelia. It didn't really strike me as significant or memorable as a whole. I recommend reading the book before the guide. Note that this guide, like all of the guides, may contain spoilers. With so many potential points of connection woven into the novel, the reader can chose the threads that they are most interested in unraveling, whether your interest may be exploring the impact of secrets, the many layers of adoption, the feeling of shame or any other connections that you make. Regardless, I enjoyed how the storyline unfolded as the reader learned Ma’s backstory right along with Benny and Byron. For instance we heard a lot about how Byron felt as a black man in oceanic sciences and in life and I would have preferred to see more depth in a few scenes rather than a dusting of interactions here and there. Off the island, there were numerous places where I wanted to see the scene rather than be told how the characters were feeling, especially Byron’s backstory. I especially enjoyed Covey’s story on the Caribbean island- her swimming and surfing and making the black cake with Pearl all were very vibrant and memorable. I loved the flow and layering of the different perspectives through short chapters in Black Cake. |
